Martin Wimmers: Nominated for Germany’s “Manager of the Year” for the second time in a row

Vote for him on line! Martin Wimmers has been managing Fischer Connectors’ fortunes in Germany for over 17 years now. This passionate solution finder is a true team player and that’s why he’s been nominated for the « Manager of the Year » (“Manager des Jahres”) award twice in a row, in 2020 and 2021, by the German trade magazine Markt&Technik. The voting system runs on line until March 31, 2021.


This annual competition shortlists nominees in eight categories; each category’s Manager of the Year Award goes to the one who has received the highest number of votes on line.

Martin Wimmers’ short portrait by Markt&Technik: “As Managing Director Germany, Martin Wimmers heads Fischer Connectors GmbH, which is part of the Swiss family company. The last priority was maintaining the supply chain. The company manufactures important components for medical electronics, including the Cardiohelp cardiopulmonary support system from Getinge. In addition, Martin Wimmers accompanied the introduction of the « Freedom » connector series, which opens up new possibilities in the wearable electronics sector.”

Martin Wimmers has answered a few questions on the occasion:


How long have you been working at Fischer Connectors and what exactly do you do?


I’ve been working for Fischer Connectors GmbH as Managing Director since January 2004. My main task is business development for the German, Austrian and Eastern European regions. This involves a large sales part, as well as a managing director’s other numerous areas of responsibility, including financial and personnel responsibility.


What was your professional career like up until you joined Fischer Connectors?


After studying electrical engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne, I started out as a graduate engineer in product marketing at Siemens Matsushita Components (now TDK-Epcos). After three years of international activities, I changed from Marketing Executive at Siemens Semiconductor Sales to Sales Engineer for the Bavarian region. Reorganizations at Siemens Semiconductor (today Infineon) brought me back to Marketing, where I ended up as Senior Marketing Director. In 2001, I moved to the IT industry as Sales Manager. In 2004, I finally started working for Fischer Connectors.


What do you like best about working at Fischer Connectors?


I particularly like the diversity of products, the design possibilities this opens up, and collaborating with our customers. Finding solutions to meet special requirements and focusing on the customer’s needs with the whole team is an exciting challenge every time. In the process, I’ve already been able to work on many special and unusual products, including in the area of miniaturization in measuring systems, as with our customer ME-Meßsystem, or in predictive maintenance on the railways with ITTH.


How do you spend your free time? Do you have any hobbies?


I’m a big soccer fan and used to be a player myself. I follow the Bundesliga and the Champions League closely. Otherwise, I like being out in the fresh air sailing and hiking. Badminton is also an important part of my free time. During the Covid period, I’ve been keeping fit doing online karate with my club colleagues.


You’ve been nominated « Manager of the Year » for the second time by the trade magazine Markt&Technik. What do you think makes a good manager?


Above all, you always have to stay in touch with day-to-day events and the employees. Listen, understand and involve the team in decisions. That also means taking decisions together and cooperating closely with colleagues and customers. We’re a family-owned business. And we want to live up to that. Of course, this also entails a constructive « debate culture », i.e. discussing different points of view and ideas, and getting everyone on board. It also means trying out new ways and things. And if things don’t work out, you learn from it and make corrections. As a manager, it’s important to be passionate about what you do. You have to live things. Especially during the Covid pandemic, that’s important: we all have to rethink and adapt. As a manager, you have to show the way, take your team with you, and support it. That’s the only way we’re successful at Fischer Connectors: as a team.
